Photography

I've never been one for photography at least until now. Clare loves to take pictures and when she asks me to take some I argue that the camera gets in the way and spoils my enjoyment of the moment. I've changed my mind A good photograph can be as entertaining as a good piece of music (well almost).

I'm going to start start saving my pennies for a good quality amateur DSLR or sub DSLR. Not sure of budget yet. Assume I have all of the imaging software I'd need but an recommendations for camera body and lenses would be gratefully received.

Incidentally I took these pictures wih my first digital camera (Sony Cybershot 3 megapixels) do you know what city?

Gravatar Image1 - The two most common DSLR brands are Canon or Nikon and it comes down to personal preference. My friend has gone down the Canon route and is totally happy. I've gone down the Nikon route, with a Nikon D80 being my first true DSLR moving on from a prosumer Konica Minolta with fixed lens previously. I have a Nikon D80, a couple of 4GB SDHC cards, a Nikon 18-135mm lens, a Sigma 50-500mm lens (love it, no stabilisation so you need to get your breathing right, but great to use), and a Sigma 10-20mm which I've just bought while on a trip to NYC. I carry it all in a canvas over-shoulder Billingham bag so I don't look like a camera nerd! The beauty of such a camera is it's very powerful - fully manual for everything, including customising the menus, but you can quite easily start in a full auto mode, and get used to how the photo is being taken if you wish. I also chose to read as much as I could a good while ago, regarding F stops, depth of field, aperture, white balance, and almost everything else, so it made complete sense to me on the camera. And went on a course a year or so ago in London, run by a freelance National Geographic photographer, and that moved my skills on, and wasn't an expensive course. I'm just about to move on from the D80 and get the D700 - I can't justify the D3 as it's a whole big bag of money, but want to move up to something that is better suited to fast wildlife photography and gives me more control over surf photography. I'm not sure what part of the world you're in (I tried to see details about you on the blog but couldn't) but if you're over in the SW London area, you can gladly borrow my camera for a day and go and have a play. I use Adobe Lightroom for library and developing the photos and it's got be used to some really simple, sensible techniques. If you want more info, just mail me direct ... I'm always around Emoticon Mark
